Remember those immortal words of the Wizard of Oz: "Pay no attention to the man behind that curtain."?
It is sad, but we've see that many companies seem to say and feel the same thing to their clients when it comes to computer and website technologies. They may list somewhere what technologies they use, but it is very rare that they provide any type of information or discussion in depth about those technologies, and why they choose them.
To the contrary, here at The Geekworks we feel that it is best to provide you full access to that area 'behind the curtain'. Our intention is to provide you with knowledge that will help you make an informed decision about the software and methods used to manage and promote your business.
Some 95% of people with computers use Microsoft Windows as their operating system, along with many other proprietary, closed-source software solutions. While there is certainly nothing inherently wrong with this, most of those same people don't realize that there are other options, free options, free as in ''No Cost'', and free as in ''Free Access'' to the source code which make the software/applications work. This type of software is known as "F/OSS", for "Free/Open-Source Software", and it runs a large part of what you know as the internet and/or 'World Wide Web'.
The Geekworks have long been users, proponents, and promoters of F/OSS for both operating systems and software applications. For example, our website design work is done mostly on systems using the GNU/Linux operating system (using virtualization to cross-check browser compatability and graphic rendering on other operating systems) and software tools like the GIMP, Scribus, and Xara Xtreme. Obviously, these tools can produce quality work that rivals or surpasses their pricy, proprietary competition.
The Geekworks also regularly recommends and installs F/OSS applications for our customers, ranging from 'fun' applications like media players, to more 'serious' security solutions which help protect their computers and data from the "Black Hats" of the internet community.
We will be glad to discuss with you your needs, in an effort to see what the amazing world of F/OSS has to offer for your particular situation.
